Travel to Tibet from Malaysia with Visa-free from Dec.1st, 2023 to Nov.30, 2024

According to the new policy announced on November 24, 2023, tourists holding Malaysian passports can now enter China without a visa for up to 15 days. This makes visiting Tibet even more accessible for you, as obtaining a Tibet Travel Permit is now hassle-free with just a Malaysian passport.

Within these 15 days, you can explore almost all tourist destinations in Tibet. It is suggested to arrange a trip to Tibet for around 10 days during the 15-day visa-free holiday. Because you need to go to the mainland first and then transfer to Tibet, you need to reserve the corresponding transfer time.

In addition, the train from most cities to Lhasa takes three days. Even the shortest train from Xining to Lhasa requires one night's stay on board, which takes nearly 20 hours.

Here are some recommended Tibet tour packages for your visa-free trip to China.

1. 8 Days Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Tour

The 8-day Lhasa to Everest Base Camp tour is the most popular Tibet tour package among our customers. Starting from Lhasa, you will explore the iconic Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. Journey southwest to Gyantse and Shigatse, immersing in the beauty of Yamdrok Lake and the historic Tashilunpo Monastery. Culminate your adventure with a picturesque drive through the Himalayas to Everest Base Camp, where the majesty of the world's highest peak awaits.

2. 10 Days Lhasa to Everest Base Camp and Namtso Lake Tour

Another recommended travel route for you to explore almost all the highlights of Tibet within 15 days of visa-free vacation is to travel from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp and Namtso Lake in 10 Days. After the classic 8-day journey to Everest Base Camp, extend your exploration with a 2-day excursion to the revered Namtso Lake. Marvel at the stunning views of the crystal lake, framed by the snow-capped Nyanchen Tangula Ranges. En route, traverse the expansive grasslands of Northern Tibet, providing glimpses into Tibetan nomadic life. Immerse yourself in this enriching extension, capturing the essence of Tibet's diverse landscapes and cultural tapestry.

3. 4 to 6 Days Lhasa and Surroundings Tour

The classic Lhasa city tour takes 4 days. If you don’t want to go further but just travel around the city, you can spend 1 or 2 more days at some of the nearby attractions, like Namtso Lake, Yamdrok Lake, Ganden Monastery, etc.

From Beijing to Lhasa

By flight
There is currently only one direct flight per day to Lhasa from Beijing, although there are a larger number of indirect flights that stopover in Chengdu en route to Lhasa. The direct flight takes around 5 hours to get to Lhasa Gonggar International Airport, and costs from around US$ 500 for an economy ticket.

By train
The train from Beijing to Lhasa is the Z21, which leaves daily at around 8:00pm. The journey covers 3,757 kilometers across eight provinces in mainland China as well as Tibet, arriving in Lhasa around 40 hours later at 12:10pm on the third day. However, in the summer season, from May to September, it can be hard to get a ticket for the train from Beijing to Lhasa, due to the huge demand. One option to counter this would be to take a flight to Xining, in Qinghai Province, and then get the train from there, as there are more carriages on the Xining train and a better chance of being able to procure a ticket.

From Shanghai to Lhasa

By flight
Flights from Shanghai leave several times a day, although there is currently no direct flight to Lhasa. The flights stop at Xi’an, Chengdu, Chongqing, or Kunming, and take from around 8 hours to as much as 26 hours for the multiple-stop flights. The cheaper flights start from around US$ 455.

From Chengdu to Lhasa

By flight
From Chengdu, there are numerous direct flights to Lhasa, which take around 2 hours 15 minutes on average. With more than 15 flights a day from Chengdu, it is one of the best airports from which to fly to Tibet, and with the short travel time, it is one of the best options for those with time constraints. It is also relatively inexpensive, costing from around US$ 233 for an economy flight.

By train
The trains from Chengdu depart every other day at around 9:37pm, and arrive in Lhasa on the third day at around 9:55am. From HongKong to Lhasa

Without a direct flight to Lhasa, there are several options for connecting you to the Tibetan capital. Flights to Chengdu from Hong Kong and then on to Lhasa are very popular, as is the flight to Xining via Chengdu, and then taking the train to Lhasa. You can also take the train direct from Chengdu, or for the very adventurous, you can get a train direct to Guangzhou from Kowloon Station in Hong Kong, and then get the train from there to Lhasa, a total journey time of around almost 60 hours, that covers nearly 5,000 kilometers.

By Flight to Kathmandu

Coming from the opposite direction, Nepal is the only country in the world with direct international flights to Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, making it a preferable entry point for many travelers from Malaysia. Flights only run from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and take just 4 hours to reach the Nepali capital airport. With more than a dozen direct flights to Nepal every day, costing from around US$ 180 per person for an economy ticket, Kathmandu is the cheapest and easiest way to get into Tibet.

Kathmandu to Tibet

By Kathmandu to Lhasa flight

There are several daily flights from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, provided by Air China, Tibet Airlines, and Sichuan Airlines. The flight normally takes just 90 minutes and has the added advantage of allowing you a bird’s-eye view of the summit of Mount Everest as the plane flies over the Himalayas. An average economy ticket costs from around US$ 400.

By the Epic Overland Tour from Kathmandu to Lhasa
