Get to Chengdu from Vietnam Firstly, then Head to Tibet from Chengdu (90% Choice)
Chengdu, a popular gateway to Tibet, offers convenient access to Tibet with frequent non-stop flights, railways, and highways. This is why most travelers from Vietnam opt to start their Tibet tour from Chengdu.
Furthermore, the highlights of Chengdu, such as giant pandas, Sichuan cuisine, and side trips to Mount Emei, Leshan Giant Buddha, Jiuzhaigou Valley, and more, make it an excellent prelude to a Tibet tour.
Currently, only Ho Chi Minh City offers daily non-stop flights to Chengdu, which take 3 hours and 35 minutes from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. There are no direct flights from Hanoi to Chengdu. The connecting flight from Hanoi to Chengdu always has a layover in Guangzhou, which takes around 6 hours.

Once you transfer in Chengdu, it is worthwhile to take a half-day tour to Chengdu Panda Base, where you can see over 80 pandas up close in a semi-natural environment. If you are lucky, you can meet the famous 'Hua Hua' panda at the Panda Base. The panda tour in Chengdu is truly a wonderland for panda lovers.
If you have additional days to spend in Chengdu before heading to Tibet, consider side trips. You can visit Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha in 2 days, explore the Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mount Qingcheng in 2 days, or take a 3-day flight or 4-day land journey to Jiuzhaigou Valley from Chengdu.
After experiencing the best of Chengdu, Take a Train/Flight to Tibet or Overland via the Most Beautiful Sichuan-Tibet Highway
There are multiple direct flights available from Chengdu to Lhasa, with an average flight duration of around 2 hours and 20 minutes. Normally, there are more than 15 flights from Chengdu to Lhasa per day, making it one of the best options for traveling to Tibet by air. The flights are reasonably priced, starting from approximately US$160 for an economy ticket.
Beside Lhasa, Chengdu also provide direct flights to Nyingchi, which takes around 2 hours. If you would like to start your Tibet from the eastern Tibet, you can fly from Chengdu to Nyingchi and then overland to Lhasa and further to the west of Tibet.
There is also a train to Tibet from Chengdu (Z322), which departs every other day from Chengdu to Lhasa. The Chengdu to Lhasa train journey spans a distance of 3,070 kilometers and takes a little over 37 hours to complete. There are ticket prices for the two classes onboard is ¥627.50 for a Hard sleeper and ¥997.50 for a soft sleeper.
And the highway from Chengdu to Tibet via the Sichuan-Tibet Highway is praised as the most beautiful land route to Tibet. If you have enough time and budget, you can take a 10 days overland tour from Chengdu to Lhasa.

Get to Guangzhou from Vietnam Firstly, then Head to Tibet from Guangzhou (70% Choice)

Alternatively, there is a train to Tibet from Guangzhou. The train Z265 (Guangzhou to Lhasa) departs daily from Guangzhou Railway Station and arrives at Lhasa Railway Station on the third day. The whole journey takes over 54 hours, making it the longest railway route to Tibet. On Guangzhou to Lhasa train, the price for a Hard sleeper is ¥876, while a Soft Sleeper is ¥1490.

Currently, there are both direct and indirect flights available from Beijing to Lhasa. The non-stop flight from Beijing to Lhasa takes around 4.5 hours, while the indirect flights from Beijing to Lhasa have layovers in Chengdu or Chongqing before reaching Lhasa.
The Z21 train departs from Beijing every day and arrives Lhasa Railway Station on the third day. It travels a distance of 3,757 kilometers, passing through 8 provinces in the mainland of China. The price for a Hard Sleeper on the Beijing to Lhasa train is ¥720, and the Soft Sleeper is ¥1144.
As one of the most popular train to Tibet, tickets of the Beijing to Lhasa train always sold out quickly in summer holiday and the Golden Week at the beginning of October. So if you plan to take a train to Tibet from Beijing, make your reservation as early as possible.

Get to Nepal from Vietnam Firstly, then Head to Tibet from Nepal
Nepal is one of the most popular gateway for tourists taking the overland tour. It is one of the most epic overland journey through the Himalaya from Kathmandu to Lhasa via the Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway.
Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is also the only city that provides international flights to Tibet. The direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa takes around 1.5 hours. However, it is not available till now (update: October, 2023).
If it is your favorite, you can get to Nepal from Vietnam and then take the overland tour from Nepal to Tibet via Gyirong border.
Get to Kathmandu in Advance for Group Visa to Tibet
To enter Tibet from Nepal, you need to apply for the special China Group Visa through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. It generally takes 3 working days, so it is suggested to arrive in Kathmandu at least 5 days before you heading to Tibet to leave enough time for your Group Visa application.
From Vietnam to Nepal, you need to take connecting flights through cities like Bangkok (Thailand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), or other regional hubs, because there is no direct flights from Vietnam to Nepal.
After Getting Your Group Visa, Travel Overland to Tibet via the Gyirong Border
Currently, there are no direct flights available from Kathmandu to Lhasa. So you can only take the overland trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa via Gyirong border. Our knowledgeable Tibet guide will greet you on the Tibetan side.
To ensure a smooth transition to the high altitude, you will spend some time acclimatizing in Gyirong County before gradually moving eastward to visit Tingri, Everest Base Camp, Shigatse, and ultimately reaching Lhasa.
